The Rise of Role-Playing Games (RPG)

Role-playing games (RPG) are the ‘in’ thing among the youth today. Actually, this has been the case in the last five years or so. Here in Manila, not all homes have a computer. That’s the reason why internet cafes have mushroomed like crazy in the city. That’s also the reason why the RPG trend has been sustained, even flourishing at that. If you’re a parent of a ten-year old boy, now you could probably guess where your son goes to after class.

One of the more popular RPG these days is the DEUS EX. According to Wikipedia, it’s “a cyberpunk-themed action role-playing game developed by Ion Storm Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000, which combines gameplay elements of first-person shooters with those of role-playing video games.” Cool game, eh?

I believe my brother has played it before, spending most of his allowance on internet cards than food. He seems to be more interested in girls now, but that’s a different story. I remember he once asked me to get him a Microsoft XBOX as birthday present because he wanted to play DEUS EX at the comforts of our home. But the frugal me didn’t give in to his request and instead, just gifted him with a new mobile phone.

If you’re really into RPG like the one I mentioned above, I suggest you invest in it by buying your own game. There are many online shops that sell them. Just make sure you deal with a legit one so you don’t end up wasting your money.

Infant Nutrition: The Benefits of Alpha Protein

Infant nutrition is crucial to every newborn's health and well-being. Children are lucky these days because science and technology are continually advancing which pave the way to the development of new food sources, preventive measures and medical treatments that help strengthen their immune system for optimum health. One good example in this direction is alpha protein.

Alpha Protein Proven to Improve Infant’s Long-Term Health

Cases of long-term health problems like obesity, cardiovascular ailments, and insulin resistance have been increasing year after year. These have prompted medical professionals to look beyond medical treatments and seek effective preventive measures. Infant nutrition, particularly protein intake during the early stages of infancy, has been identified in strengthening or weakening a person’s long-term health.

Controlled random examinations in preterm and term infants cited by the research paper, “Early origins of cardiovascular disease. Is there a unifying hypothesis?” by Lucas Singhal, proved that “early nutrition has a major impact on long-term health including cognitive function, bone health, and risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Atul Singhal, a professor of Pediatric Nutrition and deputy director of the University College London, explained in a forum that the long-term growth and development of infants depended not just on the quantity of nourishment they receive but on the quality as well. He also heads the Clinical Trials and Cardiovascular Nutrition group at the MRC Childhood Nutrition Research Centre’s Institute of Child Health at University College London, which researched on “The Importance of Protein for Long-term Health.”

Although a high protein intake may improve and accelerate young infants’ growth, parents should focus on the quality of protein they feed their babies. “While a higher protein intake has short-term advantages for growth, adverse programming by high protein intake and faster growth suggest that the optimum nutrition of infants is more complex than simply ‘more is better,’” said Dr. Singhal.

Alpha protein or á-lactalbumin is beneficial to the overall health of infants. Unlike other whey-based proteins, alpha protein is easily digested by babies and lessens the possibility of vomiting, spitting up, or food intolerance of babies. This important protein helps improve the kidney function of babies and the absorption of essential minerals like zinc.

Alpha protein also enhances babies’ sleep patterns and appetites. It contains helpful amino acids with tryptophan which also enhance the disposition or mood of children. Children who are given alpha protein are healthier and stand to have more enduring health benefits.

I planned of attending a Halloween Party but a vicious typhoon messed with it and it didn't push through. The money and other resources to be used for the Halloween Party was donated instead to the typhoon victims. Because of it, my plan to shop for Halloween costumes for adults fizzled out. But it's okay, the money went to good use.

Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) leader Ka Eraño G. Manalo died of cardio-pulmonary arrest yesterday. This was confirmed by the INC-owned television network. He was 84.

Ka Erdie Manalo's remains will be brought to Templo Sentral of the Iglesia ni Cristo in Quezon City. The country mourns the death of this great spiritual leader. May his soul rest in peace.

Just a while ago, Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez was crowned Miss Universe 2009. She bested 84 contenders from around the world, including our very own Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo. I was able to watch the coronation ceremony and it was fabulous. International music artist Heidi Montag performed there live, to the delight of the audience. The publicity Miss Philippines Pamela Bianca Manalo got in her own country was enormous. However, it seemed it wasn't enough to help her get the coveted Miss Universe crown that is allegedly valued at US$120,000. No regrets because she's already a winner having been sent to the Bahamas Islands to compete. Still, the Filipino nation is proud of her.

The other winners include Miss Dominican Republic Ada de la Cruz (first runner up) and Miss Kosovo Marigona Dragusha (second runner up) along with two others.

During last year's Miss Universe pageant, it was also Miss Venezuela who won. They're really very lucky when it comes to beauty pageants.

Nobody But You, the Korean hit song from the Korean all-girl band Wonder Girls has taken the Philippines by storm. Pinoys have been appreciating it very much as evidenced by young girls on the street dancing to the tune, complete with the distinctively Korean steps. The local boob tube didn't want to get left behind. The Kapamilya and the Kapuso networks did their own version of Nobody But You aired on July 19, 2009 through their top variety shows ASAP '09 and SOP Rules. It's the It Girls versus the Beautiful Girls. You be the judge as to which group did it best.

Personally, I liked the Kapamilya version (It Girls) more. They got the look and the moves, way better than the Kapuso version(Beautiful Girls). The Kapamilya girls were all young and pretty, unlike some of the Kapuso girls who were just plain and young-looking.

June 2009 PRC Nursing Board Exams Results | 32,617 New Nurses in RP

The country has over 32,000 new nurses as indicated by the June 2009 PRC Nursing Board Exams Results that the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released today. From a big number of 77,901, passers were 32,617.

Golda Manto Yap from Felipe Verallo Memorial Foundation in Cebu topped the June 2009 PRC Nursing Board Exams with a rating of 86.90 percent. Second place was Ronie Rose Capati Arevalo of Adamson University, 86.40 percent.

Others in the top 10 spots came from Arellano University, Naga College Foundation, University of Sto. Tomas and University of the Philippines, among others.

It's official. There will be no classes on all levels tomorrow, July 27, 2009 in the Philippines. This is in observance of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) as well as the
Government workers though has to report for work as they are not included in the suspension. That's why I'm sad. I'm a goverment worker and need to report to the office tomorrow. Hay.

Traveling has always been my passion. If I had more money, I would have traveled all over the world. I always see myself in a different country, exploring the places there, the culture and the food. Whenever I travel, I make sure to plan my itenerary well. That includes choosing the best airline for my transportation.

The invention of airplanes has made traveling a lot faster and a lot easier. Airplane tickets can be bought in an instant online. If you have the resources, you can even get the best seats in any airlines. Traveling has never been this efficient and comfortable. I wonder though how aircrafts are maintained by the airline companies. They must have a pool of aircraft technicians and an aircraft repair room with complete aircraft harware and supplies.

It must be very costly and hard to maintain aircrafts. That's why airplane tickets don't come cheap. The aircraft technicians have to do a regular canvass and purchase of aircraft screws and aircraft washers, as well as other items that are regularly used. The operations of the airline companies have to be smooth and efficient all the time, so no aircraft should stay in the repair room for days.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) announced that the Philippines will witness a solar eclipse on July 22. If you live within Metro Manila, it will happen at exactly 8:33:01 a.m. Watch out for that because this is surely gonna to be spectacular.

The state weather bureau said the path of the moon's umbral shadow will begin in India and is expected to cross Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Central China, the Pacific Ocean, Ryukyu Island, Marshal Island and Kiribati.

It said a partial eclipse will be witnessed in several parts of the Philippines including Metro Manila, Calayan Island, Laoag City, Tuguegarao City, Baguio City, Angeles City in Pampanga, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Lucena City, Naga City, Iloilo, Cebu, Zamboanga, Sulu, Davao and General Santos City.

PAGASA said the eclipse will start in Metro Manila at exactly 8:33:01 a.m. The eclipse's full visibility will be seen at 9:43 a.m. and will end at 11:01:51 a.m.

Regine Velasquez, First Filipina Celebrity to Get the A(H1N1) Virus

Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez admitted to the public through an interview last night by GMA 7 that she got afflicted with Swine Flu. Velasquez said it was the reason why she was not able to push thru with her guesting on Charice Pempengco's concert held recently.

For the record, Regine Velasquez is the first Filipina celebrity to acquire the A(H1N1) virus. She said her immune system was weak and so she got the dreaded Swine flu. She was sick for a few weeks and underwent quarantine. She did not elaborate though as to where or whom she got the virus from.

Thousands of Filipino nursing graduates flocked to their respective testing centers last June 7 and 8, 2009 to take the PRC Licensure Exam for Nurses (Nursing Board Exams). A few days from now, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) will be releasing the June 2009 PRC Nursing Board Exam Results and you can count on this blog to deliver them all at once: updated, accurate and complete.

How many nursing examinees will pass? Will the number increase this time around? All this and more will be answered soon when the June 2009 PRC Nursing Board Exam Results come out.

OK Magazine Michael Jackson Cover Photo

OK Magazine has the late King of Pop Micheal Jackson on the cover of its latest issue. According to reliable sources, OK Magazine paid $500,000 for the cover photo of the dying Michael Jackson. Reportedly intended to pay tribute to the King of Pop, it's now creating outrage among the legendary pop icon's musician friends and fans. In fact, as of this writing, a petition is ongoing to stop the publication of more copies of OK Magazine Micheal Jackson Cover.They believe that it's not in any way trying to showcase the musical legacy of Michael Jackson but instead, trying to make more money by creating sensationalism on the untimely death of the King of Pop.

The petition argues that OK Magazine has violated Micheal Jackson’s right to privacy. Sarah Ivens, OK!’s editorial director, is trying to defend the cover as quoted here:

“It’s a photo that captures the surprise and the upset and the moment of this breaking news story . . . I hope the cover will provoke readers. It celebrated the man, but it also does expose that he was an eccentric character who lived a very controversial life.”

Now people, you be the judge. Personally speaking, I find the act blatantly insensitive. Dying Micheal Jackson on the cover of any publication will just add pain to the bereaved family and fans of the King of Pop.

DOH Hotline for A(H1N1) Virus-Related Questions

With the Swine flu cases in the Philippines increasing by the minute, it is only apt that the Department of Health (DOH) reaches out to Filipinos through a hotline that provides asisstance even just by answering people's queries about the dreaded A(H1N1) virus. If you haven't tried it yet, dialing 155 using your mobile phone will connect you a pool of call center agents trained by the DOH to accommodate Swine flu-related questions. However, it is NOT free as most of you may have thought.

Try calling Hotline 155, a help line set up by the Department of Health (DOH) in partnership with Smart Communications, Inc.

Launched on Tuesday, the hot line will be manned by call center agents trained by the DOH to accommodate A(H1N1)- or swine flu-related queries.

The service, however, is available only to Smart, Talk and Text, and Red Mobile subscribers, which means queries can only be made using a cellular phone.

Smart public affairs head Ramon Isberto also clarified that the services are not free and normal rates apply “to screen out prank calls." Isberto said it would consider the suggestion of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III about giving discounted call and text rates for the DOH hot line.

In addition to Hotline 155, Smart subscribers can also reach the DOH via “Text 700-DOH." To use the service type: DOH (space) FEEDBACK (space) question and send to 700364.

King of Pop Micheal Jackson dies Thursday, June 25, 2009 in LA, California at the age of 50. Michael Jackson's stardom dates back in the 1980's where he'd been known all over the world for his groovy dance moves and high-pitched voice. His 1982 album "Thriller" is still the biggest-selling album of all time, having sold over 26 million copies. His hits, on the other hand, include Beat It, Billie Jean, Black and White, Heal the World and Thriller, among others. Michael Jackson songs are considered timeless because of their global appeal.

The world is in grief today as another famous pop culture icon, who became a subject of controversy because of his addiction to plastic surgery and child molestation cases, succumbs to death. The circumstances of Micheal Jackson's passing remains unclear though, until this point. Police just found Micheal Jackson not breathing inside his Los Angeles home.

Red yeast rice is a rice variety with a yeast called Monascus purpureus. It is normally found and used in Asian countries (probably thousands of years ago)as both food and medicine. At present in the United States and Europe, red yeast rice serve as an alternative cholesterol-lowering treatment.

A new study from the physicians in Pennsylvania (published in the June 16 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine) has found a significant cholesterol-lowering effect of a commercially available nonprescription red yeast rice product in a small group of people who cannot take statins because of severe side effects. Statins are a type of drug that helps lower cholesterol of people with cardiovascular diseases.

I'm not an expert when it comes to gift ideas, but for fathers, a nice greeting card with personalized message is a winner. Also, you might want to consider preparing a special meal for him. After all, that's the way your mom used to get to his heart. Or, you may opt to buy him a present such as a new tie, a new pair of socks or a new pair of pants.

And if you have a lot of cash to burn, why not treat him to the spa so he could relax and you two could have a bonding moment. If he's a techie like you, why not use some customized My Space graphics and comments to show him that you care. I heard my online friends talk about their good shopping experience with them. I think it's a good thing because word of mouth is a sure way of promoting a business, may it be online or offline. The question is, is AyosDito.ph capable of protecting its users/clients from scammers posing as legit dealers?

Admittedly, it's too early to tell if a new website or service provider has the capacity to keep its users from getting victimized by scammers. As long as there are people who are into illegal business, there will always be victims of scams.That's why precautionary measures are very important, especially when shopping online.

In fairness to AyosDito.ph, they provide tips and reminders that aim to educate or warn users when transacting with dealers.

David Carradine is Dead: Bangkok Suicide or Foul Play?

Yes, it was confirmed. David Carradine, 72 years old, died in a hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand today. Thai police has not yet confirmed if it was a suicide or there had been foul play because the Hollywood actor was found dead hanging by a nylon rope. David Carradine was known because of his portrayal as a Shaolin monk in the popular TV series "Kung Fu" and as Bill in two Kill Bill movies starred by Uma Thurman.

Hollywood must be in grief now due to the untimely passing of Carradine. There's no denying that he was a good actor. I still remember having watched Kill Bill 1 and 2 and had sympathy to his character there because even if he was a bad guy in the said movies, he took good care of Uma Thurman's child. Funny but true.

My condolences go to David Carradine's family and loved ones.

LTFRB: Metro Manila Taxis To Issue Receipts To Passengers

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced that starting today, taxi drivers within Metro Manila are to issue receipts for taxi fares. Normally, receipts must come directly from taxi meters but at this point, taxi drivers can only give manual receipts to passengers. LTFRB has deferred the implementation of the new policy to give taxi operators and drivers the time to acquire the needed devices.

LTFRB Chairman Alberto Suansing said the receipts will indicate the name of the operator, name of the taxi driver, license plate, place of the transaction and the amount of the fare, among others.

This is good news for commuters like me, but then again, I hope our taxi drivers will follow the rules accordingly.

Farm Town, the newest and probably the most popular Facebook application/game today is currently taking the Facebook community by storm. In the Philippines, I know a lot of people that play Farm Town. Basically, it is a community of farmers each with a corresponding farm to manage. The goal is to plant as many seeds as possible and harvest them to earn money, which in turn would enable the farmer to plant more crops in his farm. Crops include grapes (the easiest to plant and the quickest to harvest!), potatoes, rice, corn, sunflower, apple trees, etc. Farm Town is complete with the necessary farming tools and a market where the harvest gets sold.

Farm Town is definitely an addicting game. Not only do you get the chance to experience working in a farm, you also get to know new people. Each farm has neighbors which makes it more exciting and fun. This is especially true during harvest time when you can hire your neighbors to harvest your yields. You both earn in the process so it's always a mutually beneficial relationship.

The same issue is even a hot topic on some Marian Rivera fan sites.The management of Blue Water Day Spa has recently published a press release to clarify the matter and in response to statements made by Popoy Caritativo (Marian Rivera's manager) to the press in the past few weeks:

"Every year, we change our endorsers for BlueWater Day Spa and it remains the company's perogative who we choose to represent as our endorser. As of the issue of who dropped whom, there were NO negotiations for renewal with Ms. Rivera or her representatives that ever took place."

April 7 is World Health Day

The seventh day of April is World Health Day.I started the day reading about the negative benefits of red meats. Which made me swear to start eating less red meats in this lifetime.

Actually, I am trying my best to be a pesco-vegetarian. For the uninitiated, it simply means that aside from vegetables which are the basic staples of vegetarians, you eat white meats. I find the practice hard to follow but I'm sure I'll make it. Eating in moderation is really a must if you want to live a long and healthy life.

The movie Dragonball Evolution was inspired from the well-loved Japanese manga Dragonball. It is directed by James Wong,the man behind the Final Destination movies. If you haven't watched it yet, you can find my review of the Dragonball Evolution HERE.

Basically, the story revolves around Goku who seeks out to find the great Master Roshi and gather the seven dragonballs, of which he has one. This was after the death of his grandfather Gohan in the hands of the evil Lord Piccolo who has returned to the earth to get all the seven dragon balls and use it to take over the world. Goku's quest is to secure the mystical orbs before Piccolo does.

It's not yet here, but soon it'll be. All of us in the Philippines are watching out for the release of the 2009 Philippine Bar Exam Results by the Supreme Court of the Philippines. Who among those who took the bar exams last September 2008 will emerge as our new lawyers? Your guesses are as good as mine. Let's all hope for the best for our friends who took the bar exams last year. Oh and, have you heard the rumor that the Supreme Court will release the results end of March 2009? I'm keeping my ears and eyes open for that. :)

Will Conficker.C Appear on April Fool's Day?

Techie or not, you may have heard about Conficker.A and Conficker.B. They are the PC viruses that have infected thousands of computers (OS, Windows, etc.) and damaged thousands of data recently, to the consternation of IT experts worldwide. Now, the Conficker creator is out to plague the entire IT landscape with a new one called Conficker.C. This PC worm is allegedly set to be released on April 1 (April Fool's Day).

The critical thing about Conficker.C is that "it will detect and kill certain system processes designed to find and remove it." If that would be the case, IT experts should work harder to figure out a way to prevent it from taking its course.

For Lost fanatics, Oceanic Airlines is a common thing. Basically, it is the fictional airline used in the popular series. It operated Flight 815 which crashed on the Island. The Oceanic Airlines logo has 18 dots spread around concentric circles. These dots formed 4 circles. The logo uses a motif that has resemblance with Australian Aboriginal glyphs.

If you come to think of it, Oceanic Airlines sounds cute and can really be used as name of a real airline.

MV Doulos is Back in Manila | The World's Largest Floating Library is Here!

MV Doulos, the world's largest floating library that has visited over 100 countries during the past 30 years, has come back to the Philippines. The ship is currently docked at Pier 13 and will be staying here in Manila until March 30, 2009.

The last time MV Doulos visited the country was in 2007. Back then, I wasn't able to go but my friends did and had fun. Bookworm or not, you should not miss this very rare opportunity to peruse through thousands of books, literary materials and volumes. It's gonna be a rich, cultural experience. I heard the crew are multi-cultural, too. I am definitely going! :)

Every house has a policy. At Microsoft man Bill Gates' family home, you won't find any Apple Mac products. This was confirmed by no less than Bill Gates' wife Melinda Gates in the latest issue of Vogue magazine.“There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don’t get for our kids,” said Mrs. Gates. It's a no-brainer to me since Apple is the primary competitor of Microsoft. I wonder what the Gates kids feel whenever they see the other kids in the neighborhood playing with their Apple gadgets.

I guess it's about time for Microsoft to expand a bit and develop their own mp3 player and mobile phone.I'll be watching out for that.

The social network's "25 Random Things About me" has spread like wildfire online, with millions of people publishing the 25 random facts their friends may or may not know about them. In the spirit of friendship, this is beneficial. But if we will look at it from a different perspective, it may be a cause of concern.

Boredom,peer pressure, popularity and a sense of obligation are just some fo the factors that have pushed people to respond to the "chain letter." Admittedly,the response was overwhelming and some members of the media even thought about it negatively. They said people has become too narcissistic.
